What is Data Act?
The Data Act is a law designed to enhance the EU’s data economy and foster a competitive data market.
Data regulation in the EU, including recent frameworks like the Data Act, aims to establish clear, fair rules around the sharing and use of data. Adopted by the European Parliament and Council in December 2023, the Data Act primarily seeks to balance the rights of data holders (those who collect and store data) and data users (businesses or individuals generating data through the use of connected devices). Effective in September 2025, it applies across sectors, ensuring transparency, accessibility, and fair distribution of data’s economic value.
The regulation encourages innovation by making industrial data accessible and fostering trust in data-driven applications. For example, the Data Act enables users of connected products (like smart devices or industrial machinery) to access, control, and share the data they help generate. Additionally, it includes safeguards against unfair data-sharing practices and enhances data portability, allowing smoother integration and service switching across Europe.
